Description |
Lyne Starling (1784 - 1848) was born in Virginia, moved to Kentucky in 1794, and came to Franklinton (now Columbus) in 1806. Starling earned his living through real estate, as a merchant and working as a public official in the early days of the capital city. Starling's mercantile business allowed him to buy numerous parcels of property in Franklinton, west of the Scioto River, and become one of the larger landowners. When land became available on the forested eastern side, Starling, John Kerr, John Johnston and Alexander McLaughlin acquired large tracts of property. This property became the land where the Statehouse building was erected when these men convinced Ohio leaders to make Columbus the capital in 1812. Starling also supplied the land and funds to build what became the Starling Medical College (1848 - 1907) and St. Francis Hospital (1865-1951), the first combined medical school and hospital governed by a single board of trustees in the United States. |
